BCOS Public Relation Successes

The Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State through its News and Current Affairs Department initiate, produce and broadcast news materials accurately, objectively and impartially to members of the pubic. This is in addition to in-depth reporting, analysis and discussion of news items through current affairs programmes. It is also on record that through the various news bulletins from the Radio and Television channels of BCOS, several lives have been saved while the Corporation has also brought smiles to the faces of many. The list of the beneficiaries of the human angle stories of the BCOS is endless but some cases readily come to mind each time this are of social usefulness of the Station is mentioned.

First, was the case of Tunde Aworinde in 1987, which opened the flood gate of requests to the public to offer financial assistance to people with health problems.

The four year old nail in the head girl, Bose Oyo discovered by the BCOS on the January 1, 1995 which gained national prominence and her life was eventually saved at the UCH, Ibadan. One will also recall the readiness with which Nigerians offered financial aid to Augustine Adoroh, a 300 level classics Student of the University of Ibadan who suffered kidney failure in 1996 - it is also on record that in 1999, the life of Mrs. Idowu Raimi, an ovarian tumor patient already written off by medical experts at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan was saved through the assistance of philanthropists, who heard her case on BCOS and rose to her aid. ' .

Furthermore, by the timely intervention of the News Department in 1998, young Abiodun Oladokun was able to raise sufficient funds to 'push in' his externalized intestine and get back to school. The externalized intestine of the six year old Biodun was packed in a polythene sack when his mother brought him to Ile Akede to solicit funds to effect surgery at the UCH, Ibadan in 1998. The operation was successfully done and the boy 'Biodun' is hale and hearty till today.

Besides the above, special focus on topical and developmental issues are usually highlighted to sensitize the Government and general public. The programmes such as "Saturday Special", "View Points", "Panorama", "Highlights", "Political Forum" are second to non as they are generally acceptable to the members of the public.

The directorate of programme, through it various activities have been informing educating and entertaining members of the public. Prominent star programmes of the station such as "Eyi Ara", "Mid-Morning Show", "Good Morning Nigeria", "Amuludun", "Drain", "Play", "Sport tit bits" are without rival. Also, public enlightenment programmes and jingles continued to be given much needed attention in fulfillment of the social and statutory responsibilities of the station. It is also incontrovertible to say that programme like "So Daa Bee" has played prominent role in the settlement of dispute ranging from issues of domestic, land matters and community issues thereby promoting peace and' tranquility within the State and, beyond.

In the commercial services unit, air time on both Radio and Television is made available for sale to Advertisers, small scale industries, multi-nationals and individual alike to promote their businesses. Also, there is opportunity for coverage of social diaries event, live coverage of important ceremonies, commercial jingle production, show promotion and advertisement at moderate cost.

In the Public Relations Unit besides providing regular information to members of the public on the station and also answers all enquiries as they comes, it handles lost but fond items. It is on record that many valuable documents and important items lost but found by good Samaritans and brought to the State have been given to their owners free of charge. This is part of the Corporation's corporate social responsibilities. The lost but found item programme on the Radio channel of BCOS is broadcast twice daily. The Yoruba version of programme comes up every week day (Monday - Friday) at exactly 10.02am while the English edition comes up at 1.10pm.

Besides the above, the Public Relations unit also facilitates usage of the open space by interested members of the Public Relations unit also facilitate usage of the open space by interested members of the public. Open space at Car Park side and popular Exhibition Ground of lie Akede with beautiful landscape are made available for rent to interested members of the public for social function like wedding, funeral party, anniversaries, religious programmes, annual general meeting of Associations and shows. The two spaces or venues are given out based on formal request or application for the use of the place and payment of required fee. The two venues and open spaces are unique because of their capacities to accommodate many people, vehicles and other factors like security.
