The Birth
Along the time, Ogun State started test
transmission while the networking was still
on. The Oyo State Governor, Col. David
Jemibewon therefore gave an ultimatum to the
Management to stop networking and began
transmission independent of Ondo and Ogun
States. The Station consequently swung into
action.
While preparations towards the deadline were
on, it became imperative to carve a pet name
for the station, one which will be catchy
and easy for all and sundry to remember
instead of the long name - the Broadcasting
Corporation of Oyo State. After a series of
brainstorming on many suggestions, the
'Anglicized' spelling of Oyo which is O-Y-O
suggested by the late Banjo Solaru a former
broadcaster with WNTV-WNBS was adopted.
Radio O-Y-O therefore became the name which
the station was know far and wide. On 1st
October, the Station went on air with a new
call signal - Radio O-Y-O which is still
being used today. On 9th December, 1976, the
Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation OGBC
went on air leaving Oyo and Ondo to run
network programmes until 31st March 1977.
BCOS began independent programming on 1st
April, 1977. The studios of the defunct WNBS
were being used for transmission. |
