Development Of BCOS Public Relations
Activities
At the inception of Radio O-Y-O arm of
Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, the
organization has six directorates namely
Administration, Finance, Programmes,
Engineering, Commercial and News & Current
Affairs. Each of these divisions continued
to perform its specified functions towards
the achievement of the organization's
corporate objectives.
Public Relations Unit was a division under
the Administration Department. The
Administration Department became a
full-fledged directorate in January 1978
following the splitting of the former
Finance and Administration Division into two
separate Divisions.
The Administration Department performed the
functions of supervising the personnel
Establishment, Staff Welfare, Security,
Legal, Public Relations, Staff motivation
and work incentive functions.
Public Relations Unit was charged with the
responsibility of playing a liaison role by
maintaining adequate relations with staff
and member of the Public and strengthening
the image of the organization widely through
Publications and the distribution of printed
programme schedules and gift.
The early day of Radio O-Y-O especially few
years after inception witnessed transition
to Civil Rule Programme of the Government
and emergence of Political Parties which
made it imperative for high degree of
interaction and communication between the
management and members of the public.
Consequently all these resulted in an
increase in the activities of the unit.
The Public Relations unit was
administratively put in principle under the
Administration Directorate but practically
function for convenience and efficiency sake
through the General Manager's Office.
The first Public Relations Manager's of BCOS
was Mr. Bayo Fasoro, for the projection of
the image of the Station, the Public
Relations unit was involved in the
production of corporate gifts, calendars,
stickers and other promotional items. The
establishment of the radio O-Y-O Fans Club
across the State was also handiwork of the
Public Relations Unit.
It was also on record that a house journal
known as 'The Gong' was introduced as a
means of promoting mutual understanding
between the staff and the Management besides
serving as a veritable instrument through
which member of the staff can express their
feelings and opinion on issue of collective
responsibilities without fair and
persecution or reprimand by the Management.
"The Gong" later comes out in Newspaper form
and news item published by the newsletter
gained prominence in several national
dailies.
Following voluntarily retirement of Mr. Bayo
Fasoro, PRM BCOS in 1989, Alhaji Niyi Yusuff,
was made the Principal Public Relations
Officer, BCOS.
In 1992, as a result of staff disposition
based on needs, advancement, and career
progression, Alhaji Niyi Yusuff was
transferred to the News and Current Affairs
Department of BCOS as Chief Editor (Radio
and Television) BCOS.
The Public Relations Officer II, Mr. Goke
Adelakun who had been assisting Alhaji Niyi
Yusuff few months before his transfer, was
mandated to take charge of the running of
the unit. The unit makes sure that
activities of the station are well
publicized.
Image of the State sustained and enhanced by
several local and international awards have
been received; better understanding,
communication, and cooperation and feedback
are regularly obtained through the
activities of the unit.
However the needs and expectation of the
Management, challenges and dynamics of
societal changes, political, socio-economic,
cultural and other environmental factors
sometime normally dictate and affect roles,
functions and performances of Public
Relations Managers at any point in time.
